I think this is a really interesting topic that we have been given.
Here is a link to a debate about news being 'dumbed down' and also being 'tarted up'.

Personally I watch Sky News a lot. I like the style of Sky and find BBC news in a word - boring.
Do you think that dumbing down the news is part of the progression of television programming or a reaction to the publics lack of interest in current affairs?

Yo.
Just finished watching a Dispatches on Ken Livingstone, and can't help but think these "investigative journalism" programmes are going downhill...
I'm sure they used to have more journalistic integrity, but now they're making dubious references to Livingstone's connections to (horror of horrors)communist Russia. Or, really, his connection to someone who had a connection to communist Russia. And he drinks too much. Apparently...
Are they really that strapped for ideas that they have to rely on tabloid-esque "Livingstone's a drunk" claims to get us to watch?
Recaps after every commercial break and repetitions of what I've seen in the adverts isn't holding my attention.
I don't know if it's dumbing down or "funking up," but it's not what it used to be...
The debate attached to the link is quite interesting because it shows that even after an attempted "dumbing down-tarting up" there's really been no effect. Does this mean that it doesn't matter what we do to the news, the mere fact that it is news makes people turn off?
